It's become a cherished tradition - thankfully - to spend my birthday in Croatia as part of a week-long rejuvenating retreat. Last year was no exception. Finally, I had the opportunity to venture a bit farther in the neighboring country, and we traveled all the way to Brela. Brela village and municipality are located in the Split-Dalmatia County of Croatia, nestled at the foothills of massive mountains. This small village is nearly 600 km away from Budapest, just a few kilometers before Makarska. It's worth going on a day without a shift change, as the 6-hour journey can easily turn into a 9-10-hour crawl.
This week, I primarily wanted to spend with relaxation in mind, but of course, I cannot stay still in one place, so amidst the plethora of swimming, we also embarked on a small mountain hike.
Popular Beaches
Brela is famous far and wide for the beauty and cleanliness of its beaches. The most famous beach is Punta Rata, often referred to as Croatia's most beautiful beach. The fine gravel shore, crystal-clear water, and the towering Biokovo mountain range in the background offer a breathtaking sight. The beach gradually deepens, making it ideal for families with small children. Along the shore, you can rent plenty of sun umbrellas and loungers, and there are several places to purchase refreshing drinks.
The Brela Stone (Kamen Brela), a rock rising from the sea, is the symbol of Punta Rata and a perfect photo spot. Not far from here is the Podrače beach, which is also gravelly and attracts visitors with its crystal-clear waters. The beach is smaller and more intimate, making it ideal for those seeking a quieter retreat.
Less Crowded Beaches
If you prefer to avoid the crowds, it's worth exploring the lesser-known, hidden beaches as well. Ikovac beach could be an excellent choice. This beach is smaller and quieter than Punta Rata, but just as beautiful. The water here is also crystal clear, and the surrounding pine trees provide pleasant shade.
Vruja beach is another great alternative. This beach is accessible by foot or by boat, which means fewer tourists visit. The proximity to nature and the tranquility here is particularly soothing.
Restaurants and Gastronomic Experiences
Brela's culinary offerings are also worth mentioning. Seaside restaurants pamper foodies with their fresh seafood dishes and local specialties. Obala restaurant, for example, is famous for its seafood dishes and the splendid sea view. The dishes served here are always fresh and delicious, with fish and shellfish coming directly from local fishermen.
Konoba Feral is another excellent choice. This traditional Dalmatian restaurant offers dishes made from local ingredients, and the cozy terrace offers a beautiful view of the sea. Grilled fish, squid, and Dalmatian pršut (ham) are particularly popular here.
Recommended Activities and Hiking Trails
Besides relaxation, Brela offers numerous activities and hiking opportunities for adventure seekers. Due to the proximity of the Biokovo Nature Park, hiking enthusiasts can particularly enjoy their time here. One of the most popular hiking trails is the ascent to the Sv. Jure peak, which is the highest point of Biokovo, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surroundings.
The Brela-Baška Voda hiking trail is an excellent choice for a lighter yet spectacular hike. The route follows along the coast, offering stunning views of the sea and the surrounding mountains.
The Brela Promenade is also a great program, running along the seaside and passing by numerous small bays and beaches. Along the promenade, you'll find charming bars and cafés where you can relax and enjoy the scenery.
I chose the "Morning Hike at The French Road - Educational Path" trail through the Alltrails app. Since it's extremely hot in summer, it's worth starting the hike before sunrise to witness the sunrise. The hike itself is quite pleasant, but be prepared for the fact that the trail leads up along the mountainside. If you start from the village, the most challenging part will be the many stairs.
Nearby Attractions
Many attractions in the vicinity of Brela are easily accessible. Makarska, the nearby town, is just a few kilometers away and awaits visitors with its rich historical heritage, museums, and vibrant nightlife.
The Biokovo Skywalk, a glass-floored lookout offering stunning views of the sea and the mountains, is also a must-visit. For adventure seekers, rafting tours organized in the Cetina River canyon offer an unforgettable experience.
The nearby city of Trogir, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage, is also worth a visit. The old town is full of historical buildings and charming streets where you can take a leisurely stroll.
Brela is a true paradise where relaxation and adventure meet in perfect harmony. The beautiful beaches, the stunning mountains, the excellent restaurants, and the numerous activities all contribute to making our time spent here an unforgettable experience. Whether you're seeking tranquility or adventure, Brela welcomes everyone with open arms.
